As goes the Ford Mustang coupe, so goes the Mustang convertible. Ford unveiled the updated 2018 Mustang fastback earlier this week, and the company is milking the facelifted pony car’s 15 minutes of fame with the debut of the refreshed 2018 Mustang convertible some three days later. Whereas the tintop car was unveiled with the help of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson at simultaneous events in Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York City, Ford is pursuing a more low-key approach to the droptop’s debut, opting to show off the car at a handful of regional auto shows in areas such as Kentucky and South Carolina.
Unsurprisingly, the 2018 Mustang convertible sports the same changes as its hardtop sibling. The V-6 base engine has been eliminated from the lineup, leaving Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and 5.0-liter V-8 as the only engine options. Ford is touting performance gains for both mills, although power and torque figures for both powerplants are still undisclosed. The engines channel their output through either a six-speed manual transmission or an all-new 10-speed automatic.
Additionally, 2018 Mustang coupe features can be selected for the convertible. Among them are electronically adjustable magnetorheological dampers from the GT350 and a variable exhaust that keeps things quiet at lower rpm but can amp up the noise courtesy of valves that open under heavier throttle applications.
Look for the updated 2018 Mustang convertible to follow its coupe counterpart to dealerships this fall at an expected $1000 to $2000 price increase over the current car’s $31,585 starting figure.
